Stories About Autism

Podcast Episode 5 – Autistic Not Weird

A few years ago, before I’d started blogging, I spent a lot of time searching Google and Facebook for autism pages, trying to get a glimpse into what life was like for other families. I wanted to learn as much as I could so I could understand my boys better, and how best to help them.

One of the first pages I started reading that was written by an autistic adult, was written by Chris Bonnello, called Autistic Not Weird. After I started this blog I got in touch with Chris and have got to know him a little bit since then, following his page online.

So it was great to be able to get him onto the podcast and have a proper chat with him, and find out more about his own story.

We talk about what life was like for Chris growing up, and how his life changed a few years ago when he received his autism diagnosis.

Chris tells me about his life as a teacher, working in mainstream and special needs schools, and how that’s led to him becoming a special education tutor.

We talk about what made him start a blog, some of his most popular posts, and advice he has for parents and autistic teenagers. You can read those posts in detail on his blog Autistic Not Weird

We also talk about how sometimes online there can be a divide between autistic adults and parents of children with autism, and how important it is that we try to bridge that gap.

A really interesting and insightful interview, and I hope you like it.
